Wiregrass Hemp Plants in the Ground - WTVY, Dothan

Headland, Al. (WTVY) – CBD is blooming and experts say the industry is expected to produce billions of dollars in the next few years.

Thursday’s rain drenched Wiregrass crops in the ground, but farmers hope for more to get the highest yield.

Farmer Jeremy Doswell is in the middle of his first planting season.

“3 thousand, 4 thousand plants in this area this is a plowed field with no ground cover,” said Doswell.

He started with test plants, after a drought halted bigger plans.

“We can use all the rain that we can get at this point we have our field all laid out where it can drain so if we can get it, we can figure it out,” said Doswell.

Now months later things are springing up –

“It’s definitely been a learning experience there’s been four different planting methods, only one of the four is the best for our area,” said Doswell.

And out of the dirt onto shelves – sales are getting higher.

“The market is really flowing at this point right now we feel if we can take what we learn this year and turn it into an investment for next year,” said Doswell.

Jessica Kelton at the Wiregrass Extension Office tells us there’s a reason so many hemp farms are taking root in the Wiregrass.

“There’s a huge interest in it because of the potential profitable return per acre we expect there to be even more,” said Kelton.

Kelton says this first year is all about questions and answers –

“We don’t have a step A, B, C, or D of how we are producing this or the issues we are going to have so we really depend on our growers to let us know what kind of issues they are facing,” said Kelton.

Jeremy Doswell also tells me that his hemp is a couple of weeks away from flowering.
