RESEARCH. NICK: ANNETTE WILES WALKS AMONG HEMP PLANTS AT MIDWEST HOP PRODUCERS — ONE OF 10 FARMS TO RECEIVE A GROWER’S LISCENCE. — LICENSE. >> WE TOOK GETTING THE LICENSE VERY SERIOUSLY HERE. WE KNOW THERE WERE ONLY 10 GIVEN IN THE STATE, SO WE TAKE THAT AS A RESPONSIBILITY TO DO THAT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. NICK: THE RESEARCH, DONE IN COLLABORATION WITH UNL EXTENSION OFFICES, SEEKS TO DISCOVER THE BEST WAY TO GROW HEMP IN NEBRASKA. >> WE FOUND THAT WHEN CHANGING THE SOIL, WE WERE ABLE TO SEE A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN PLANT VIGOR, THE GROWTH, THE LEAF DEVELOPMENT AND SO ON. NICK: AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE RESEARCH IS TESTING CBD AND THC LEVELS AS THE PLANT GROWS. >> YOU’VE GOT TO GET A BASELINE. JUST LIKE OUR HOPS, WE GET A BASELINE OF OUR ALPHAS AND OUR BETAS, AND THEN YOU KNOW LIKE, THE NEXT WEEK WHEN YOU TEST IT AGAIN, HOW MUCH IT’S INCREASING. SO YOU CAN REALLY WATCH WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH YOUR PLANTS. NICK: TO HELP WITH THIS PART OF THE RESEARCH, WILES HAS PURCHASED A PURPL-PRO TESTING DEVICE. IT ALLOWS THEM TO TEST THC AND CBD LEVELS RIGHT HERE IN NEBRASKA. >> I COULD DRIVE IT TO COLORADO, BUT THEN I’D BE DOING IT THE FIRST WEEK AND THE SECOND WEEK AND THE THIRD WEEK. SO WE RESEARCHED, AND TO GET A TOOL FOR $1,500, THAT’S GOING TO HELP US MAKE SURE THAT THESE PLANTS DON’T GET ABOVE.3%. — THESE PLANTS DON’T GET ABOVE .3%. NICK: THAT WILL HELP THEM KEEP THEIR PLANTS WITHIN THE LEGAL LIMITS OF THC. AS ALL AS — AS WELL AS HELP THEM MONITOR THE LEVELS OF BOTH THC AND CBD AS THE PLANTS GROW. THE DEPARTMENT OF AG JUST GRANTED THEM A THREE-MONTH EXTENSION ON THEIR LICENSE THROUGH THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2020. >> WE WILL WORK WITH THE UNIVERSITY TO PROVIDE SOME FLOWER TO THEM SO THEY CAN WORK ON SOME OF THAT STUFF IN THE FOOD PROCESSING AREA AND START DOING THEIR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL. Midwest Hop Producers using special tool to aid in hemp research

10 farms were awarded licenses to grow hemp products as part of a UN-L research program over the summer. The licenses were set to expire at the end of the year, but one of the farms was given an extension into 2020. The research being done at Midwest Hop Producers seeks to discover the best way to grow hemp in Nebraska. An important part of the research is testing CBD and THC levels as the plant grows. To assist with this part of the research, Annette Wiles has purchased a Purpl-Pro testing device. It allows them to test both levels right here in Nebraska. The tool will help them keep their plants within the legal limits of THC and help monitor the levels as the plants grow. The Department of Agriculture just granted the farm an extension through the first quarter of 2020.
