(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There’s bad news for Illinois hemp farmers, if their plants are too much like marijuana.
Hemp farmers in Illinois could be forced to destroy their crops, if their hemp is too much like marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are related, but hemp is supposed to lack enough of the chemical THC to make people high.
The head of the Illinois Agriculture Department, John Sullivan, said hemp farmers are required to let state inspectors check their crops before they can harvest.
If state inspectors find hemp that is more than 0.3 percent of THC, all of that farmer’s hemp must be destroyed. The farmers won’t qualify for federal crop insurance.
