FSA offers Risk Management Coverage for hemp in 2020
Hemp is the hot topic commodity as we enter the 2020 growing season. As you may know, hemp is a high value crop, and as is with all high value crops, the risk of growing hemp can be significant.
To protect against risks such as extreme weather, the Farm Service Agency (FSA) will offer risk management coverage for hemp for the first time in 2020 as part of the Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP). NAP is like crop insurance, except it provides coverage for crops that are typically not insurable through commercial crop insurance programs.
The deadline to apply for 2020 hemp coverage is March 16, 2020.
If you plan on growing hemp in 2020, you must register your acres with the FSA by completing a 2020 Acreage Report. This can be completed at the Wythe/Bland FSA office located at 100 USDA Drive in Wytheville, VA. You can also contact the Wythe/Bland FSA office for more information by calling 276-484-9391.
Important Deadline for Hay and Pasture Farmers
February 18, 2020 is the deadline for hay, pasture, alfalfa, fruit and vegetable farmers to obtain coverage for the 2020 growing season to protect against potential drought, excessive moisture, hail, winds, and other weather related crop losses. For more information please stop by the Wythe/Bland FSA office located at 100 USDA Drive in Wytheville, VA. You can also contact the Wythe/Bland FSA office by calling 276-484-9391.
