On Thursday, May 30th, Men’s Health announced its 2019 Grooming Awards winners. With so much innovation in the grooming category since last year, many of the products featured are unlike any of the ones featured last year. With the legalization of hemp and its derivatives, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, one of the newest breakouts onto the beauty scene in 2019 was CBD.
While this non-psychoactive cannabinoid is finding its way into everything from toothpicks to suppositories, the beauty, grooming and skincare space has to be one of the most logical applications of its natural benefits. In fact, Jefferies analysts estimate that the CBD beauty segment specifically could reach $25 billion USD globally in the next ten years and will capture 15% of the entire skincare market.
The companies that gain an early-mover advantage could establish a tremendous edge over competitors in the coming years, so we’ve taken notice of the three products that made the Men’s Health cut this year.
Which Products Made the Cut
There were a total of seven categories that products could be evaluated in for the Men’s Health 2019 Grooming Awards. Tested by the editors, each product was placed into one of the following buckets:
Body
Hair
Fragrance
Mouth
Face
Whiskers
Innovations
Out of the seven different segments, hemp and CBD-based products were only highlighted in two of them.
In the body category, Men’s Health selected Earthly Body’s CBD Daily Intensive Cream which boasts natural ingredients like hemp-derived CBD, aloe, essential oils and more.

Not only is the CBD Daily Intensive Cream non-psychoactive and THC-free, but it is also Leaping Bunny-certified so you know that you’re buying a cruelty-free product. Men’s Health, however, likes it due to its versatility and pain-fighting power.
“This CBD infused cream can be used on your face as a calming moisturizer, but really shines when you use it on other parts of your body, too. The CBD helps to curb aches and pains, giving you a sense of deep muscle relaxation.”
In the face category, Men’s Health selected two different hemp products. For a 1-2 punch that offers facial moisturization and anti-inflammatory powers, editors selected Cannuka’s CBD Calming Eye Balm, which, thanks to its nationwide roll-out through Ulta Beauty is one of the most widely-available CBD beauty products in the country.

One of five different SKUs offered by Cannuka, the CBD Calming Eye Balm combines the powers of Manuka honey and CBD to create an ultra-effective product. As with all Cannuka products, they’re 100% non-psychoactive, THC-free, and PETA-certified. Whereas some CBD products can take a while to set in, Men’s Health editors love how quickly Cannuka’s CBD Calming Eye Balm took effect.
“This thick eye balm is best for those days where your eye bags are really out of control. It’s crazy moisturizing and the addition of CBD helps to calm inflammation and de-puff quick.”
Also selected in the face category, for its acne-fighting abilities, was Kiehl’s Cannabis Sativa Oil Herbal Concentrate.

While this product is infused with hemp seed oil, not hemp-derived CBD, it still harnesses one of the many natural benefits of hemp to provide an herbal concentrate that calms your skin and reduces redness too. Beyond its antibacterial benefits, Men’s Health loves how easily it can be integrated into your daily regimen.
“Use it at night in place of or underneath moisturizer, especially if you struggle with breakouts.”
Opportunities for Next Year
As noted above, there were seven different grooming categories that Men’s Health was evaluating products in, but hemp and CBD-based products only made it into two of them.
If the Men’s Health editors are evaluating grooming products in these different segments, then chances are – so are many male consumers whether it’s conscious or not.
Conclusion
Maybe next year we’ll see hemp and CBD-based products in all of the seven categories.
With products like Nomad Haircare‘s CBD-infused Transcend Serum recent break-out onto the beauty scene with Miley Cirus’ recent red carpet endorsement, we’ll be sure to see CBD breaking into the men’s haircare segment before Men’s Health begins evaluating products for 2020.
As for other categories like whiskers, it is only a matter of time before some company creates a CBD-infused shave cream or hemp-oil infused aftershave. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to updates here so you never miss an important development.
